I tried the little train tour of the Saltworks for you

All aboard !

2:00 p.m. The passengers take their seats, the driver climbs aboard, and off we go for a 1 hour 15 minute journey through towering salt mountains and stunning pink lagoons.

Covering 8,000 hectares, the Salt Works are a true natural treasure stretching across several departments and providing a haven for wildlife.

More than 200 bird species can be found here, including the famous flamingos, which we quickly spot.

Our guide begins by explaining the remarkable work of the salt workers, before introducing the impressive machines used to harvest and shape the salt into its iconic pyramid-shaped mounds, known as camelles, named after a camel's hump.

A short stop at the Salt Museum gives us the opportunity to learn more about the history of the Aigues-Mortes Saltworks through informative displays explaining salt production and its benefits for the human body.

The highlight : climbing to the top of a salt moun

The driver makes a short stop, giving us a few minutes to climb to the top of a camelle, one of the iconic salt mounds. This special moment rewards us with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

From the top, we admire the salt marshes stretching as far as the eye can see, the impressive white salt mounds nearby and the medieval town of Aigues-Mortes, less than a kilometre away. The sunlight reflected on the pink lagoons and the salt creates a fascinating natural scene – a true postcard of the Camargue.

3:15 p.m. Time has flown by ! Our adventure, filled with discoveries and wonder, is already coming to an end. The final stop is at the Salt Works shop, where we discover a range of emblematic regional products, including the famous La Baleine salt and fleur de sel, as well as the Salt Works' new wine cellar featuring local wines such as Saint-Louis and Terre de la Baleine.

We also find cosmetics from the Eclaé brand, made using the benefits of salt. It's the perfect souvenir to extend the Salt Works experience at home.
