The Votive Festival

In autumn, when golden lights illuminate the ramparts of Aigues-Mortes, the town comes alive to celebrate one of its most emblematic events : the votive festival. Every October, this deeply rooted tradition in the hearts of the locals brings together families, friends and visitors around a shared love for Camargue culture.

The dates of the Votive Festival

The next Votive Festival will take place in October 2026.

THE PROGRAMME OF THE VOTIVE FESTIVAL

Every October, Aigues-Mortes celebrates its Camargue traditions with enthusiasm through its Votive Festival, one of the highlights of the year for both residents and visitors.

A full week of festivities followed by a lively weekend : 12 days of celebration where bulls and horses are at the heart of the atmosphere.

► The start of the day : the meadows and the gardians

The day begins in the meadows outside the ramparts, where the gardians sort the bulls on horseback.

It is the perfect moment to enjoy a friendly breakfast in the meadows with friends, families and curious visitors before the festivities move into the town.

► Throughout the festivities :

  • Abrivados : the bulls, guided by the gardians, enter the town and head towards the arena.
  • Arena races : in the temporary arena set up at the foot of the South Rampart, cows and horn-capped bulls offer excitement and spectacle to spectators.
  • Bandidos : at the end of the day, the bulls return to the meadows after crossing the town, always escorted by the gardians.
  • Boules tournaments : every afternoon, pétanque games bring together young and old for moments of sharing and friendly competition.
  • Concerts, balls and bodegas : when night falls, the celebration continues in the squares and streets, where music, dancing and conviviality extend the tradition late into the night.

The setting is unique : the plan, this arena made of wooden stands called theatres, brings together residents and visitors in a lively popular atmosphere.
