The Tour Carbonnière, Grand Site de France

Erected at the end of the 13th century, at the same time as the ramparts of Aigues-Mortes, the Tour Carbonnière stands proudly in the heart of the marshes, like a solitary sentinel. Square in shape and built from the same rusticated stone as the ramparts, it spans the road, an imposing landmark for all those seeking to reach Aigues-Mortes by land. At the time, it was the only way through, standing at the end of a long roadway supported by bridges, and impossible to avoid.
