Built in the late 13th century, at the same time as the ramparts of Aigues-Mortes, Carbonnière Tower stands proudly amid the marshes like an isolated sentinel. Square in shape, it is built from the same rusticated stone as the town's ramparts. Straddling the road, it stands as a gateway for anyone wishing to reach Aigues-Mortes by land.
In medieval times, it was the only access point to the town, located at the end of a long causeway supported by bridges. An essential and strategically important crossing, it could not be bypassed.
Today, the tower is open to visitors. Climb to the top and enjoy exceptional panoramic views over the surrounding marshes.
