The Saltworks of Aigues-Mortes
Located between the sea and the salt marshes, The Saltworks of Aigues-Mortes lie in the immediate vicinity of the medieval town and its famous ramparts.
This exceptional site, made up of ponds supplied with water from the Mediterranean Sea, is where food-grade salt, industrial salt and the famous fleur de sel are produced. The latter is harvested by hand using traditional methods.
Today, ten salt workers carry on this age-old tradition, carefully managing water flows according to sunshine, winds, storms and salinity levels.
The Saltworks of Aigues-Mortes offer breathtaking scenery, with shimmering pink waters, salt crystallisation ponds and rich, protected biodiversity. From certain viewpoints, you can admire the ramparts of Aigues-Mortes, in a panorama where unspoilt nature meets historical heritage.
