Founded around 1400 in a former convent donated by Saint Louis, the Confraternity of the Grey Penitents played a key role in preserving local religious traditions. After their chapel was destroyed during the Wars of Religion in 1575, the confraternity was reestablished in 1607 and continued its devotional work.
They also left a lasting mark on the artistic heritage of Aigues-Mortes, notably through the chapel and the altarpiece "The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ" by Jean Sabatier (1688). Despite historical upheavals, including the chapel’s conversion into a hay store after the Revolution of 1789, their legacy remains alive through sacred furnishings and artworks.
