Witness to Saint-Louis' embarkation for the Crusades, the church of Notre Dame des Sablons is undoubtedly the town's oldest monument, dedicated to the Virgin Mary under the name of Notre Dame des Sablons, probably in reference to the sandy marshes around the town. Built in Gothic style, it has undergone numerous transformations over the centuries.
In 1634, the church tower collapsed. It remained closed from 1738 to 1744, when restorations were undertaken: the square clock tower was raised and the church's orientation changed, with the sanctuary taking the place of the narthex. During the French Revolution, the church was used as a decadal temple, barracks and salt storehouse. It wasn't until 1804 that Notre Dame des Sablons once again became a church. Restoration of the interior began in the 1960s. The church regained the beauty of its stonework.
