Upon my arrival at the entrance of the Salin, far from the tourist crowds, I was welcomed by Luc Vernhes, a former salt worker, just a few minutes before our tour began. This intimate and privileged experience allowed us to discover the secrets of fleur de sel harvesting in a small group, ensuring rich and personalized exchanges with the guide.

It’s important to know that you should come prepared with suitable footwear, sunscreen, and a hat, as we are exposed to the sun during the tour. Additionally, for the crystallization process to work its magic, there needs to be very little wind.

This tour is offered during the months of July and August, the peak season for fleur de sel harvesting. Reservations are required, and you will need your own vehicle to reach the harvesting site.

Ancestral expertise and a unique connection with nature

The harvest of fleur de sel is an ancient craft, passed down from generation to generation. Luc, passionate about his trade, was able to share his love for this unique practice with us. He explained how, under the combined effect of wind and sun, a fine layer of salt forms on the surface of the marshes.

This delicate layer is then carefully harvested by hand, a meticulous process requiring great attention. As I walked through the site, I was amazed by the beauty of the surroundings: the salt flats, with their pinkish hues, stretch out as far as the eye can see, offering a rare and breathtaking natural spectacle. The contrast between the dazzling white fleur de sel and the blue sky is simply stunning.

This visit allowed me to better understand the bond between humans and nature in this unique region, where environmental respect is key to preserving the quality of the harvest. Beyond discovering the craft of the salt worker, it’s truly a journey through time and into the natural environment that is offered to us.
