Aigues-Mortes - Sauniers

The Tour Carbonnière

The Tour Carbonnière, an iconic monument of the Aigues-Mortes region, stands proudly at the entrance to the Camargue. Located on the road connecting Aigues-Mortes to the Mediterranean Sea, it was once part of the city's defensive system and its strategic port. Built in the 14th century during the reign of Philippe le Bel, this tower was used to protect access to the city and monitor the surrounding area.

Impressive defensive architecture

Built from limestone, the Tour Carbonnière perfectly embodies medieval defensive architecture. Its sturdy structure, with thick walls, has withstood the passage of time. Originally, it served to protect the region from invasions, while also acting as a relay station for merchants, travelers, and local residents, due to its strategic position at the crossroads of several major trade routes.

Aigues-Mortes - Tour Carbonnière

Although less imposing than other fortifications in the region, the Tour Carbonnière occupied a key strategic position in the defense system of Aigues-Mortes.

Over the centuries, the tower has undergone several transformations. It was renovated and adapted to the evolving military techniques, particularly in the 18th century. However, it has managed to preserve its medieval character and remains a valuable testament to the region's military past.

A monument open to the public

Today, the Tour Carbonnière is open to the public, offering a chance to explore its fascinating history. With its impressive architecture and unique natural setting, you can stroll around the tower and enjoy views of the salt marshes and the landscapes of the Camargue. You can also climb to the top of the tower for an exceptional panoramic view. It’s an ideal spot to immerse yourself in history while admiring the surrounding natural beauty.

To reach the Tour Carbonnière, you can drive there, but it is especially recommended to take the ViaRhôna, a pleasant route to explore on foot or by bike, allowing you to fully enjoy the surrounding nature throughout your journey.
