Nature outings in the Camargue for the whole family

Would you like to discover the beauty of the Camargue landscape on a family outing? From salt ponds and reedbeds, through canals and marshes to the Mediterranean Sea: the diversity of the Camargue's ubiquitous flora and fauna will appeal to all nature lovers. Throughout the year grey herons and egrets, coypu and moorhens, not to mention the emblematic pink flamingo, populate the Camargue outback, which you can roam through on foot or by bike.

The via Rhôna, a cycling route between the canal and age-old saltworks

Strap on a comfortable pair of shoes, pack water, a snack for the whole family, your camera and off you go to reach the Mediterranean Sea, just 6km from here, via a dedicated greenway used by hikers, cyclists and local traffic (over a section of 3 km). It's a breath-taking route!

As you leave the ramparts, turn left, cross the bridge and face the majestic, unchanging Tour de Constance. Turn left and follow the canal in complete safety down a pedestrian walkway. Leaving the pleasure crafts moored behind in the harbour, trek between salt mounds and ponds, where the vital canal waters bring a bit of freshness. Pink flamingo colonies welcome you across the pond to your right, at the heart of their natural habitat, as you arrive in Grau du Roi. Cross over to the left bank and let yourself be lured to the fishing port, where the trawlers return to unload the day's catch every weekday around 5pm.

OUR TIP:

This route is suitable for bigger children or keen little walkers. For a hassle-free return, check out the train or bus schedules.

The boardwalk at south ramparts,
an excursion with little squirts

Do you long for some fresh air and a moment of relaxation with the family? A short walk down a wooden walkway at south ramparts might be just the place to find it. Exit the city center by the south wall and take the boardwalk, which is accesible with a stroller. At the top of the path pause at a railing, facing the salt marshes. It won't be long before you spot ducks begging for their share of dry bread, moorhens and coypu frolicking at your feet  Ahead, camelles (salt mounds) reflect the light which, on a clear day, illuminates the salt marsh's crimson ponds. Continue along the path, turn right and walk to the end of the boardwalk to the gates of the saltworks, cross the footbridge and take in the city of Aigues-Mortes nestled amidst the reeds.

OUR TIP:

If you'd like to extend your walk, back track to the East, along the water duct on your right and the ramparts on the left. This is a great spot for a family picnic
