On the first floor is the guard room. It features a cupboard, a bread oven, a drinking-water well and a statue of Saint Louis. A spiral staircase provides access to the upper floor.
On the second floor, the Knights' Hall, with windows so long that they reach below the floor, was used on several occasions as a prison.
The Tour de Constance has a 190-step spiral staircase leading to a terrace with a splendid view!
The place is infamous for having been used as a prison for Protestant women from the Cévennes region, from 1686 onwards. First men were incarcerated here, then, after Abraham Mazel's spectacular escape, women. Among these captives, Marie Durand, who was imprisoned for thirty-eight years, stands as a model of Protestant resistance to intolerance. She is credited with engraving the word REGISTER (resist) on the curbstone of the well.
