Erected at the end of the 13th century, at the same time as the ramparts of Aigues-Mortes, the Tour Carbonnière stands proudly in the heart of the marshes, like an isolated sentinel. Square in shape, it is built from the same rusticated stone as the town's ramparts. Straddling the road, it is a must-see for anyone wishing to reach Aigues-Mortes by land.
In medieval times, it was the only point of passage, located at the end of a long roadway supported by bridges. Unavoidable and strategic, it was impossible to avoid.
Today, the tower is open to the public: you can climb up and enjoy an exceptional panorama of the surrounding marshes.
