Founded around 1400 in a former convent donated by Saint Louis, the Confrérie des Pénitents Gris played a key role in preserving local religious traditions. After the destruction of their chapel during the Wars of Religion in 1575, the brotherhood was reborn in 1607 and continued its work of devotion.
They also left their mark on the artistic heritage of Aigues-Mortes with the construction of the chapel and the altarpiece "The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ" by Jean Sabatier in 1688. Despite the vagaries of history, such as the transformation of the chapel into a fodder store after the Revolution of 1789, their legacy lives on in the sacred furnishings and works of art they left behind.
